To travel to China, including its islands, most individuals need a visa unless they qualify for a visa exemption. Hainan Island, for example, has a special 30-day visa-free entry policy for nationals of 59 countries. For other destinations within China, including islands, visa requirements depend on your nationality and the purpose and duration of your stay.

Visa Requirements and Exemptions:

• General Visa Requirement:

  Most travelers to China require a visa obtained before arrival.

• Hainan Island Visa Exemption:

  Hainan offers a 30-day visa-free entry for tourists, business visitors, and those visiting for other specific purposes from 59 countries, including Canada.

• 144-Hour Visa Exemption:

  Some travelers can stay in designated areas of China for up to 144 hours without a visa if they meet specific conditions, such as holding a passport from an eligible country and having onward tickets to a third country.

• Other Visa Exemptions:

  Other exemptions may apply based on specific circumstances, such as diplomatic or official passports.

How to Apply for a China Tourist Visa:

1. Determine if you need a visa: Check if your nationality and travel plans qualify you for an exemption.

2. Gather necessary documents: This typically includes your passport, application form, passport-style photo, proof of travel (round-trip tickets and hotel reservations), and other supporting documents.

3. Submit your application: Apply through a Chinese embassy, consulate, or Visa Application Service Center.

4. Pay the fees: Visa fees vary depending on your nationality and the type of visa.

5. Wait for processing: Processing times can vary, so apply well in advance of your planned travel date.
